Material World Part 2

Continuing the conversation…. talking about people and their “stuff” and the struggles more aging baby boomers are having coming to terms with the fact that downsizing requires getting rid of the stuff they’ve accumulated over a lifetime.

Since more than 10,000 people in the U.S. turn 65 each day, in a culture woefully unprepared to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing demographic, there are some facts of life surfacing with greater frequency these days –  including the law of physics that makes it impossible to stuff 3,000 sq ft of belongings into 1,500 sq ft of living space.

Here’s a short list of others:  1) We’re all going to the same place and no one gets out alive. 2) Unlike the Pharaohs we can’t take our “stuff” with us when we journey into the afterlife.  3) Anyone who has had a recent experience caring for elderly parents and getting rid of their stuff has said:  “I’m not  going to put that burden on my kids.”  And all aging baby boomers everywhere have said:  “Looking ahead, we want more experiences, not more stuff.”

Given all of that: Why is it so hard to get rid of stuff even when we know we can’t take it with us? Why do we hold on to it and resist letting go until we can’t put it off any longer? What is it about being in this place between the first two acts of our lives and the third and final act that forces such a profound paradigm shift?  If this sounds vaguely familiar, welcome to the club and feel free to attend my upcoming talks about downsizing.

How to Prepare for Downsizing? A three part series designed to inform and motivate people who are having trouble getting started or struggling with their choices.  How to create a map for a smoother transition.  A (gentle) bootcamp to help nudge you forward and answer questions like:

How to get started? Important things to consider? Common mistakes?  What about all of your “stuff “? Where to get help? How to overcome inertia? What to know about capital gains and property taxes? How to sell and buy at the same time?  What did COVID teach us?

Wednesdays March 8th, 15th & 22nd 7:00-8:30pm  All talks are FREE and held at Christie’s Sereno 720 Front Street, Downtown Santa Cruz.  Seating is limited so email [email protected] or call Tom Brezsny at 831-818-1431 to reserve a spot.
