Capitola

About Capitola

Capitola is defined by a craggy stretch of coastline that opens into a wide sandy beach with expansive views across Monterey Bay. Its appeal as a seaside destination dates back more than a century, when a large bluff-top hotel once overlooked the shoreline. Today, visitors are drawn to small inns, private beach homes, and the iconic Capitola Venetian, the pastel-colored beachfront landmark often cited as California’s first condominium development.

The town is naturally shaped like an amphitheater, with steep coastal bluffs lined by Victorian-style beach homes, a compact village floor at the water’s edge, and Soquel Creek winding through the center beneath the historic trestle bridge. This setting gives Capitola Village a distinct sense of place that feels both intimate and visually dramatic.

Capitola Village is home to a dense mix of galleries, boutiques, and casual restaurants well suited for family dining and relaxed evenings by the beach. Dining options range from classic comfort food to Mexican, Indian, and seafood, with several spots offering evening entertainment. Just upriver, the long-standing Shadowbrook Restaurant is known for its hillside setting and private tram. Nearby favorites like Gayle’s Bakery and Jones & Bones add to the area’s strong local food culture.

Capitola hosts several well-known community events, including the Begonia Festival, which fills Soquel Creek with flower-covered floats, and the annual sandcastle contest that draws large crowds to the beach. These events highlight the town’s strong community identity and seasonal energy.

The Capitola real estate market is highly specialized. Homes closest to the village and coastline command premium pricing, and the area attracts a mix of full-time residents and second-home buyers, particularly from Silicon Valley. While single-family homes make up much of the housing stock, there are also condominiums and townhomes, especially near the village core. Capitola is served by the Soquel Union School District, with schools generally viewed favorably relative to nearby communities.
